BETA Equine Nutritionist and Feed Adviser Register (ENFAR) Webinar – Free of Charge

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has launched the Equine Nutritionist & Feed Adviser Register (ENFAR). 
This has been designed to showcase equine nutritionists and feed advisers who conduct themselves professionally and engage in continued professional development, to help support horse owners when making choices on where to go to advice concerning equine feeding and nutrition.

BETA (ENFAR) Core Feeding Calculations – Useful Maths for Feed Advisers and Early Career Nutritionists – Free of Charge

To demonstrate core calculations used when advising owners and customers on feeding.  

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
– calculate the horse’s daily dry matter, as fed, fibre, starch and meal requirements
– convert requirements and feeding rates between dry matter and as fed
– calculate daily serving, number of servings and cost per day for a variety of products
– calculate nutrient content per serving/day
This course is free of charge for ENFAR members.

BETA (ENFAR) Advising effectively – what does a successful consultation look like?

Compulsory CPD for all Feed Advisers.

Understand how to take a good case history
– Understand the importance of asking the right questions to be able to give good advice
– Appreciate the importance of structuring feeding advice for the horse owner

– Appreciate the need to advise on the complete ration not just the bucket feed

– Understanding the importance of empathy, an acceptance that others have different frames of reference which influences how they manage their horses

BETA (ENFAR)Critically Reviewing Equine Related Published Information

Session Aim:

To develop a process and identify criteria for reviewing and evaluating the scientific rigour of published information to enable participants to feel more confident in critically reviewing equine research articles.  

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
– identify the suitability of different sources of information
– explain the benefits and limitations of a range of information sources  
– develop a process to critically evaluate scientific rigour of information sources
– identify qualities that indicate good-quality and poor-quality information
Online (live) from the 15th January 2026 – 7-9pm. Thereafter on demand session.

BETA (ENFAR) The latest thinking on laminitis

Session Aim:

To ensure nutritionists are aware of the findings of the latest studies on laminitis and to provide a forum for discussion around some of the challenges when advising horse owners.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

– Insight to what recent studies are finding
– Understand the role of nutrition alongside medical management
– Understand the role of a nutritionist when advising owners of horses and ponies with clinical conditions

ENFAR – Pre, Pro and Postbiotics – What are they and how do we use them?

Session Aim:

What is the overall purpose of the session? One or two sentences describing what participants will gain from attending.
To understand what Prebiotics, Probiotics and Postbiotics are, their definitions and actions. Including the legal framework of what we can, and importantly cannot, use and what the law says about how to use them.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  • Understand definitions of Prebiotics, Probiotics and Postbiotics.
  • Understand how they work, individually and synergistically.
  • Be familiar with UK Legislation on what probiotics are approved for use in horses.
  • Be able to calculate minimum inclusion rate for probiotics in feed.

ENFAR – Hydration for horses. When and how to use electrolytes. 

Session Aim:

What is the overall purpose of the session? One or two sentences describing what participants will gain from attending.
To understand the importance of hydration to the horses, and the role the electrolytes play in that.
Participants will have a better understanding of when, and how, to feed electrolytes, reflecting current research and best practices.

Learning Outcomes:

– Advise owners on the importance of daily salt and when that needs to upgrade to electrolytes
– Advise the best way to feed electrolytes, with particularly care on rehydrating alongside
– Discuss concerns around gastric ulcer risk and electrolyte use

ENFAR – Do horses need a supplement? What are supplements and how do they fit in equine diets?

Session Aim:

What is the overall purpose of the session? One or two sentences describing what participants will gain from attending.  To be able advise horse owners on when a supplement may be useful – and when it isn’t needed.
Taking ration formulation out of the lecture room and into the livery yard. Concentrating on supplements to balance the diet, and real-life owner situations such as limitations of grass only feeding, under-feeding of concentrates, and the need to economize without compromising on diet quality.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
– Ask the right horse owner questions to simply evaluate the current diet and whether a supplement is required to balance the diet.
– Discuss concerns around pasture only diets
– Discuss concerns around high concentrate diets
Recognise standard ingredients in a balancing supplement
Briefly discuss salt and electrolytes, and when to feed.

ENFAR – So you want to use herbs. Formulating with herbs and botanicals.

Session Aim:

What is the overall purpose of the session? One or two sentences describing what participants will gain from attending.
To understand the regulatory framework around using herbs and botanicals in your formulae. Particularly aimed at feed supplements, but with relevance to complete feed too.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
· Risk assess novel ingredients for inclusion in formulae, including safety and sustainability
· Understand when plants are Feed Materials and when they become Additives; and what that means for your formula
· Label correctly in the UK and EU; from declaring levels for marketing claims to observing MPLs where they are in place
· Recognise sporting restrictions both within and outside of the FEI
