Bolesworth’s safety focus brings the BETA Safety Hub

Bolesworth and the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) are delighted to announce the BETA Safety Hub will be making its debut at this year’s Dodson & Horrell Bolesworth International Horse Show.

The BETA Safety Hub came about from a conversation between Nina Barbour, director of Bolesworth, and Claire Williams, Executive Director of BETA. In addition to organising Bolesworth, Nina showjumps internationally and is aware of the dangers both on and off the horse that riders and grooms expose themselves to each day. This was brought to the fore when Nina’s close friend, Shaz Quigley, suffered a life changing injury when handling a horse on the ground. With BETA’s knowledge and expertise in all things safety, and the ability to offer hat checks and education, especially when combined with the skills that BETA’s CMO Dr Diane Fisher can also bring to an event, the BETA Safety Hub was born.

“Safety is so important, but it’s easy to overlook until something goes wrong,” said Nina Barbour. “Accidents happen, and horses are unpredictable animals, but there are ways we can reduce the impact of injuries through what we wear.

“With over 800 horses on site during the Dodson & Horrell Bolesworth International Horse Show, and the riders and grooms that come with them, we have a great platform to help support and educate people around this. We know that safety is a hard sell, but when you see the impact that freak injuries can have, it makes it very real.”

“We’re delighted to be working with Bolesworth in the BETA Safety Hub,” said Claire Williams. “We work with retailers and manufacturers all over the UK and beyond to help train and support them around safety equipment, and do a lot of work with the consumer too. We’ve just started our Summer of Safety campaign, so being able to bring it to life at Bolesworth is a great opportunity. And we have lots planned in the hub to make safety interesting.”

The BETA Safety Hub will be located next to the Castle Arena on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to learning about current hat and body protector standards and having hats fit checked for free, there’s also the option to listen to talks in the live Rider Clinics with Dr Diane Fisher, learn CPR and jaw thrusts, enter a competition to win a hamper full of goodies worth over £600, ride a mechanical horse that is programmed for high level dressage, and learn about Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances (NOPS) and how some of your favourite snacks, if shared with your horse, could lead to a positive test.

BETA’s Summer of Safety is back for 2022!

The British Equestrian Trade Association is delighted to announce the return of the Summer of Safety for 2022.

This is the second year of the highly successful campaign that was designed to help inspire, educate and encourage people to embrace safety in all areas of their equestrian life, to help keep themselves and their horses safer. This year, the Summer of Safety will run from June to August and already has a huge amount of support behind it.

“We are delighted to bring back the Summer of Safety this year,” said Claire Williams, Executive Director for BETA. “We are passionate about safety and spend a lot of time working with our members and other organisations to help make sure everyone is aware of how they can help protect themselves. Of course, things like hats and body protectors are part of the campaign, but we are looking to create a real 360 approach to educate people around all aspects of their equestrian life.”

The summer long campaign will include in person events, lives and online content from riders, manufacturers, equestrian bodies, BETA’s CMO Dr Diane Fisher, and more. In addition, the Summer of Safety will be heavily supported by BETA members in the form of competitions across the association’s social media platforms, educational information, and the ability to get involved in other ways too.

“The last Summer of Safety gave us a great opportunity to explain so many aspects of what we do as BETA, without being fun vampires,” said Dr Diane Fisher, CMO of BETA. “Being a trauma consultant, I see so many injuries and it just makes me painfully aware of how important it is that we all do everything we can to protect ourselves. We’re never going to be able to remove all the risks associated with equestrian sport, but there is a huge amount we can do to help protect ourselves, and that’s why the Summer of Safety is so important.”

The Summer of Safety will include many different aspects of equestrian safety, from hats and body protectors to handling horses from the ground, stories from riders, feed safety- including NOPS, tack safety, and more.

Speakers’ bios >>>

The event featured talks from speakers covering different aspects of business that are incredibly important in the world we live in now.

Gillian McAteer from The Citation Group was first to give her talk, which focused in on HR and issues connected to covid. Gillian shared examples of covid related cases that were raised at tribunal and explained what the examples showed and the lessons we could all learn from them. Not only did this help to illustrate the key points around vulnerable areas for companies, but also the key areas that employers needed to be aware of to protect the workforce.

The Citation Group: https://thecitationgroup.com/

Next, delegates were treated to a talk titled: ‘How to employ the right people and keep them’, given by Emma Dyer from Equine Careers. Emma shared practical tips for how to attract the right people to your brand in addition to how to write an amazing job advertisement to help get the right people to apply. Moving on, Emma also covered the area of retention and shared the seven steps to staff retention including first impressions, company culture, performance environment, training managers, encouraging communication and clarity, utilising people’s skills and, when things don’t work out, the value of the exit interview.

Equine Careers: https://www.equine-careers.co.uk/

Tim Smith from TSM Marketing was next to speak and covered the importance of a combined approach when it comes to marketing – utilising on page marketing with social media and digital. He shared different techniques and ideas around traditional and more modern marketing styles, and also fielded a lot of questions from the audience that covered influencer marketing and so much more.

TSM: https://timsmithmarketing.co.uk/

Richard Cole from Future Money Ltd then spoke around factors shaping the economy past, present and future, and provided everyone in the room with a great overview and the important why behind it. He explained what the increases in fuel and energy costs mean for business, how supply chain difficulties have led to an increase in prices, and now inflation has added another layer. But Richard’s talk was far from doom and gloom. He explained that a lot of the issues that are currently being experienced are still linked to covid, and also the signs for recovery we have seen with the UK economy being in a strong position, above pre-pandemic

Future Money: https://www.futuremoney.co.uk/

The future of retail was the subject of the next talk, delivered by Craig Smith of C & A Retail Consultants. Craig shared how the power has shifted when it comes to what retailers stock and how this is now with the customer. He talked about the agility of retailers (as shown by how many pivoted so well during the lockdowns), and insight around the struggles that bricks and mortar businesses face. Craig talked about how rotas are created in line with employees and their schedules rather than when the customer needs the service, and how this could be something to look at. The ‘experience economy’ was also discussed and how Craig, in his time with Pets At Home, had worked to give people more reasons to visit the store… and did this through taking away 30% of products. He discussed mindset shifts, in store events, immersive experiences using tech, how stores can make people feel, and also asking people what could have been better.

And last, but by no means least, we heard from Mike Seaman of Raccoon Events. Mike shared his company’s sustainability journey and the steps that Raccoon is putting in place to help make events more sustainable as it targets net zero. He explained that it hasn’t been an easy journey and whilst hiring sustainability experts has a cost implication, some of the savings that have been made as part of the drive to be more sustainable have saved the company money. He talked about targeting net zero, how Raccoon is incentivising suppliers to also become more sustainable, and the difference between visible and invisible impact and how this makes people feel and think of a show as being more sustainable. Mike urged the room to just start. There’s a lot that can be done to cut down on waste and become more eco-friendly and although it’s easy to get overwhelmed, how the key was simply getting started.

BETA celebrates the best! Awards 2022

24 Mar 2022

Companies and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the equestrian industry were celebrated at the 2022 BETA Business Awards. Winners of these prestigious accolades were announced during a newly formatted day incorporating the British Equestrian Trade Association’s Business Conference in the morning, followed by a reception and lunch with the awards presented in the afternoon.  The awards took place at the Hilton East Midlands on Thursday 24 March.
Coinciding exactly with the 2 year anniversary of the first lockdown, guests revelled in the opportunity to mix with other members of the equestrian industry for what was for many the first opportunity in months, if not years.

The BETA Conference, with its theme of Back to Business, saw a range of interesting and engaging speakers cover wide ranging topics. This was followed by a champagne reception and then lunch, before the awards ceremony started.

“This year saw a set of deserving winners in the Business Awards,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams. “The bar is always set extremely high but the last year has seen so many challenges impact on the trade from both the pandemic and Brexit that those who received a trophy this year have truly represented the very best in the industry
We send our congratulations to them all and our thanks to the companies who sponsored the awards.”

The judges added: This was a really competitive group of finalists. Due to the high quality of entries we have awarded winner and runner up.
Runner up: HorseHage and Mollichaff.  This company has made a real shift in the way they market the company and has created a new marketing stream to launch their new products as well as making good use of popular influencers.

Equestrian Retail Store
Winner: Manor Equestrian, Annesley, Nottinghamshire
Runner-up: Riseholme Feeds, Wysall, Nottinghamshire

The judges said of the winner “The quality of care and diligence was first class. Beautifully laid out shop the gentleman who served me knew his topic incredibly well”

STUBBS ENGLAND NUTRITIONAL HELPLINE OF THE YEAR

This accolade goes to the company that offers excellence in nutritional advice and service to customers – consumer, trade and retail.
Joint Winners: TopSpec Equine Thirsk, North Yorkshire
             Allen & Page, Thetford, Norfolk

The judges put all finalists through their paces this year, and the competition was hard. The two winners were too close to call even after 6 mystery callers and so to choose one over the other was not justified. Instead for the first time ever we have awarded two winners this year, for their fantastic efforts of customer service, nutritional advice and keeping the horses’ wellbeing at the forefront of their minds over sales.

BETA EXPORT AWARD

This award is presented to the company that has shown substantial and sustained increases in export activity over a three-year period.
Winner: Equilibrium Products, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire
The judge said: Both finalists were excellent, showing steady growth during a year full of challenges.  The winner showed impressive export growth as a result of careful research, planning and preparation. All of these combined with internal restructuring, strategic use of a wide range of advisors as well as innovative use of new routes to market and training through digital platforms have yielded new customers in new markets and even better prospects for the future.

CITATION TRADE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR

Awarded to the manufacturer, wholesaler or distributor judged to offer the best in delivery, customer service, product knowledge and awareness of retailer requirements.
Winner: Perry Equestrian (A.Perry Ltd), Cradley Heath, West Midlands
The judges said: From highly commended last year to winner this, Perry’s showed that they had really listened to the feedback given last year and changes made to the business were clearly illustrated, inching them ahead of the other finalists.  They provided clear details about their environmental policy and showed how this had made a difference to themselves and customers alike.

BETA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Winner: Frank Baines

Frank Baines founded Frank Baines Saddlery in 1981 and ran it until he retired from the business in 2016. The Saddlery is currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary. You could say that saddle making is in Frank’s blood, with family connections to the trade going back over 200 years. He was inspired as a young boy by his bridle-making Grandfather, and his Great-Great-Grandfather, who he was told had walked 40 miles to Walsall at the age of 13 to become a bridle maker. Frank himself became a Saddler’s Apprentice when he was 15. After many years of learning his craft, Frank started winning awards and became recognised nationally for his saddle making skills. Frank was driven by a desire to improve horse welfare and rider comfort, his creative and innovative flair was at the forefront of his saddles.
During his time running the business, Frank was extremely passionate about training and ensuring traditional skills were kept alive. In 1991, when there was a shortage of skilled workers, Frank set up a training scheme to gain the necessary skills and take the national Skill Assessment and Qualification Scheme for Saddlers. The company went on to be awarded the first National Training Award – for its investment in training staff and commitment to workforce development. The award was presented by HRH The Prince of Wales, and the company was honoured to receive letters from then Prime Minister, John Mayor and HRH Prince Charles, both of whom acknowledged the importance of developing a strong workforce to secure the future.
Frank not only founded his own company but breathed into it a spirit which is still held by the company today – an understanding of the relationship between the saddle, the welfare of the horse and performance. He has acted as a judge in the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) Saddle making competition in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Saddlers and served on the Company’s Trade Liaison Committee for 10 years.
Despite being retired Frank was recently a key driver in the establishment of the new Leather Skills Training Centre in Walsall.  He has dedicated his working life to the saddle making industry and through his commitment to training has not only ensured that traditional skills are carried on and taught to future generations outside his own company, but inspired a generation of new saddlers to come forward and enter the trade.

The award will be awarded to the feed or supplement manufacturer’s technical helpline offering the best service in nutritional advice and assistance to customers.

“Getting the right feed is so important for our horses, and we’re very lucky as an industry to have so many incredible companies providing high quality feed that’s easy for us to access,” said Claire Williams, Executive Director of BETA. “The easiest way for most horse owners to tap into this advice is through a company’s feedline, and we know what a huge impact the care and attention given at this point can have on owners and their horses. The five finalists all received lots of nominations from happy customers, so all should feel proud to get to this point. It was a tight competition.”

BETA to showcase equestrian careers during month long campaign

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) is showing its support to the varied and diverse range of jobs within the equestrian sector by pledging to feature passionate professionals in varying roles from 14th February to 12th March. The end date falls at the end of National Careers Week.

The BETA Careers Month boasts an impressive schedule of video content and Live broadcasts that will be shared across BETA’s social media platforms and podcast during the time. Not only does this provide a brilliant platform for BETA members and others professionals in the equestrian sector, but it also provides people looking for a career in the equestrian industry, colleges and universities, with real life examples of people doing those jobs.

“We have an incredibly diverse range of members in BETA, and running this campaign allows us to showcase many of them,” said Claire Williams, Executive Director of BETA. “We’re working with our members and people beyond who have kindly said they’ll help us to provide an engaging and interactive schedule of content including many live broadcasts that will also give those interested the chance to ask any questions they like.

“Although we feel that this campaign will be really useful for younger people looking to enter the industry, we also feel it’ll help increase understanding across the sector, and provide those looking to change career at a later point in their life with a fabulous resource.”

This campaign complements the BETA Thesis of the Year Competition which is BETA’s annual initiative to recognise academic excellence in undergraduate equine-related study. A win in these prestigious awards is a tremendous asset to add to students’ CVs as they embark on their chosen careers.

As per BETA’s successful Summer of Safety campaign that ran last year, the association is looking to encourage interaction around all roles discussed and beyond. All content will be available on BETA’s social media platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube, but lives will be initially stream on the Facebook Page for those wishing to participate live.
